Farallon Capital Partners, L.P. (also known as Farallon Capital Management) is a leading multi-strategy hedge fund headquartered at One Maritime Plaza in San Francisco. Founded in 1986 by Tom Steyer, the firm pioneered an institutional-style approach to hedge fund investing, employing strategies across merger arbitrage, credit, real estate, and event-driven special situations .
Tom Steyer is an American investor, philanthropist, environmentalist, and former presidential candidate. Born in 1957 in New York City, he earned a BA from Yale University and an MBA from Stanford, beginning his career at Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. In 1986, he founded Farallon Capital, growing it into a $36 billion multi-strategy hedge fund known for its institutional client base and global investments. Steyer stepped down from Farallon in 2012 to focus on philanthropy and climate advocacy. He co-founded NextGen America, a progressive political and environmental organization, and later launched Galvanize Climate Solutions, a $1+ billion investment platform aimed at tackling climate change through capital and policy. A signatory of the Giving Pledge, Steyer has donated hundreds of millions toward education, climate, and social justice initiatives. In 2020, he ran as a Democratic candidate for U.S. president, using his campaign to elevate climate policy. Today, he remains deeply engaged in public-private climate action and recently published Cheaper, Faster, Better, outlining his vision for investment-led climate transformation.
